I think Christoph Hellwig provided solution to this problem last month.
Here is what he suggested. If this doesn't fix your problem let us know.

That's a problem of kernel 2.4.17 (and earlier) and the too new binutils
in debian-testing/unstable.
Either downgrade your binutils or update the kernel to the latest
2.4.18-pre.
