Hi,

I've seen a lot of conflicting information in today's list about browsers, accessible or not, supported or not, and I'm still digging out from today's Email and have a loooong way to go yet. Let's see if we can settle this, shall we?

Taxwise had a link to an announcement from Microsoft which I ran across yesterday. It has to do with the life cycle of Internet Explorer. It reads in part: "Beginning January 12, 2016, only the most current version of Internet Explorer available for a supported operating system will receive technical support and security updates..." That's followed by a table listing each version of Windows, and the *only* version that will be supported for that version of Windows. Don't take my word for it, read it all at https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle#gp/Microsoft-Internet-Explorer

Edge has a lot bigger problems than just JAWS. (I've read that NVDA wasn't any better with Edge, but I haven't updated my knowledge lately.) For instance, our tax software provider has advised us not to use Edge with it, although one of my volunteers used Edge in the practice version of the software and it worked for him.

If you're using a modern operating system that is supported, the version of Internet Explorer that is listed in the referenced table should work with it as long as the operating system is supported. For Windows 7 Service Pack 1, that would be IE 11, and that would be until January of 2020, or until Microsoft changes its policy again.

Luckily for us JAWS users, Firefox and Chrome are light years ahead of where they were a few years ago--and in the case of Chrome, a few months ago! But I think we can all agree there are some things which just work best in IE with JAWS. Fortunately, Edge has until 2020 to get it right, again, unless Microsoft changes its policy, which it obviously has the right to do. By 2020, half of us will probably have decided to get new computers or phones or whatever devices we think are relevant in 2020. I, for one, can't stress about it in 2016.

Hope this is helpful.

Brad
