Answer to question 1 in my opinion No In Windows10 which I'm running now or even Windows8.1 when I was running that, I personally set it to manual and once a week or more I go to settings or control panel in windows8 and check for updates. The reason being on some occasions when an update is installed when you turn on your computer depending on the amount of updates it can take a while before JAWS talks at the login screen; therefore, leaving me in a quandary if something is wrong with my computer as to why it is taking so long to boot up. I rather have total control of the updating where as it keeps me out of that quandary.
