Isn't the menu key the alt key?  That is what
I always understood it to mean.

I'll answer this again because I do think it's important.  This is a "who
decided to use what jargon" situation where miscommunication is actually likely.

The ALT key has always been what brings focus on the menu bar, and now the
ribbons bar which takes its place, but you have to hit a specific key with it
to actually activate a specific menu.  I have never heard it commonly referred
to as the menu key in my 31 years in the IT world.  You generally hear
ALT+{insert appropriate letter here} is the {insert appropriate menu} shortcut.

The applications key was and is far more commonly referred to as "the menu key"
because it was introduced as a purpose specific keyboard key to bring up
context menus.  Just like "left" is implied when the phrase "click on" is used
"context" is implied when "the menu key" is referred to.  Unless someone tells
you otherwise, if you hear someone make a reference to "the menu key" the safe
assumption is that they mean the applications key.
