Hello Anna:
The symbols you have referred to are punctuations.
There are several ways to control which punctuations JAWS speaks.
1. press insert j to switch to the JAWS window.
Press the letter h while holding the alt key to enter the Help menu.
Press the letter Z to enter the JAWS start up wizzard.
Speach rate is your first choice.
Press the tab key to get to your next choice PUNCTUATION.
Press the right or left arrow to select how much punctuation you want
spoken.
Press the letter N while holding the alt key to move to the next wizzard
screen.
Continue pressing the enter key until you leave JAWS Help.

2. Press the letter V while holding the JAWSkey to enter quick settings.
Type the letters P U then hesitate then press tab.
Press the space bar to rotate through how much punctuation you want spoken.
Press the escape key twice to return to your document.
