What is the purpose of the protected view anyway?
If I take the steps above and my attachments were sent protected, will I be
able to open them normally?

Tom,

MS's apparent purpose in establishing protected files is to minimize the risk
of opening insecure documents. In your case, with so many documents on your own
system opening in this view, you might want to consider the option to stop
files from opening in protected view on a permanent basis. Here are the steps.
Note that one of them would include Outlook attachments in your permanent ban,
an option you may want to decline.

1. Press Alt-F to open the File button
 2. Press T to open Options
 3. Down Arrow to Trust Center
 4. Press Alt-T to activate the Trust Center Settings button
 5. Down Arrow to Protected View
 6. Tab to the Enable Protected View for files originating from the Internet
check box
 7. Press Space to uncheck the box
 8. Tab to the Enable Protected View for files located in potentially unsafe
locations check box
 9. Press Space to uncheck the box
 10. Tab to the Enable Protected View for Outlook attachments check box
 11. Press Space to uncheck the box
 12. Tab to the OK button
 13. Press Enter and the Trust Center dialog will close
 14. Tab to the OK button
 15. Press Enter and the Word Options dialog will close.

Adrian:

Thanks so much.

It's getting very late here. I'll give this a try tomorrow, and let you know
if it works.

For me, it takes a small bit of trial and error. The basic key sequence is:

Alt-f, then I for tools, then e.

If this doesn't work for me, I press escape, then the alt key by itself, and
then repeat the sequence above.

I'm using a 64-bit Win7 machine, Word 2010 And JAWS 15. It also worked with
JAWS 14, although the JAWS version should make no difference because these are
Word controls.

I have seen a couple of supposed resolutions to this problem and so far nothing
has worked. I would really like to find the answer. another Tom

Hello, all.

I have yet another vexing issue that is making me more and more dissatisfied
with Windows computing every day.

I currently am using Windows 7, and Office 2010 here with Jaws 14.

I am trying to open some of my own Word 97-2003 documents that I created myself
and saved on this Windows 7 computer, and Office 2010 won't let me open them,
because they are in Protected View.

Why Bill Gates and Company feels it has the right to deny me access to my own
created documents is beyond me, and frankly unacceptable.

How can I get these documents out of protected view so that I can actually
read them once again??

I tried to find the appropriate Trust Center settings, but have been
unsuccessful so far.

I'm sorry for venting, and am not at all upset with anyone here; it's just
that this is really irritating.
