Great!  It was that alt plus = command I was forgetting.  It is fine for my 
modest purposes, where I just want to list and total about 10 items.  I use the 
shift key and arrow keys to select the cells I want to total, press alt plus =, 
and it puts the total in the cell below the last cell I highlighted.  Easy as 
pie, and no need to manually enter cell numbers and formulas.

Thanks again, this question has been fully resolved.  Thank goodness I found 
this email list for JAWS!

Not the enter key, the equals key. This will get you the sum function, IIRC.
(I know it's something plus equals)
The formula is =sum([first cell]:[last cell])
