The one often mentioned on this list is Wordweb. It's owners are a little 
eccentric. for example, it's free so long as you check a box saying something 
to the effect that you haven't lately gone on a roundtrip air flight. No, I'm 
not kidding. I eventually decided the dictionary works so well, even though 
it's pretty basic, that I sent payment for the non-freaky version. You can 
invoke both the free and paid versions from anywhere in a Word document, online 
and elsewhere. It gives synonyms as well as definitions.

For years I have been looking for a Dictionary compatible with Windows 7 to no 
avail.  I have read a post this morning that strongly suggests there is a
