Hi Ed,

I've done this successfully in excel 2003, but for whatever reason,
can't get it to work in excel 2010.

I have an old post in which someone suggests pressing the key
combination jaws key plus alt plus control plus C to enable column
header reading. I don't know about you, but I don't seem to have the
necessary finger dexterity to accomplish this combination, so can't
say whether it works.

As for the define names function in excel, I have no idea why it isn't
working as advertized. I would be interested to know if you get it to
work.
