In Excel I find it far more useful to get to know the Control Plus and Control Minus keystrokes, as they allow you to do so much more from the same keystroke depending on the situation. To delete a row or column, select a cell to be deleted and hit Control and Minus. This will give you a dialog that asks you what you want to do -- delete the column, move cells up, move cells right, or delete the entire row. You can use Control and Plus to add, with the same options. If you select a row or column and then place your cursor on another row or column Pressing Control and Plus will insert that column information there. Be careful, though, as if any other columns or rows are longer than what you selected then your data is going to get messed up, as it won't add empty cells to keep the integrity of the data in that longer row or column. These are fast shortcuts that don't involve any ribbons and have worked at least back to Excel 2000. (Probably further back, but I didn't know about them back then) I don't know if this will work in Word -- I'll try it when I happen upon a document that has a table in it.
