Its microsoft security essentials. One other element is carbonite.
Heretofore, that has slowed nothing down. I'm ready to get shut of it anyway
so I think I'll uninstall it.

I don't see this at all.  If anything, I find that most pages load quite
quickly.  What virus scanner are you using?  I wonder if something in there
is scanning the pages, maybe slowing things down a bit.  It definitely
wouldn't be the first time I'd seen scanners do this.
