Mario,

Instead of Google Maps, try plain old Google. I write my query in the following
form:

Directions: origin, destination

Note the colon after "direction."

I just now tested this idea again, and here's what I found.

1. I got very specific directions when I searched for directions from one town
to another.

2. when I searched for directions within the city where I live, I didn't get
such specific directions, but various pages came up with the information I'd
need, such as nearby subway stops, miles involved, etc.

If no one has a better suggestion, I hope this works for you.

Subject: getting traveling directions

hi fellow listers, I am in need of getting directions to a destination
address and wanted to know if there is an accessible/usable service that I
can use? I tried Google Maps but it's somewhat difficult to make
heads/tales of things like where to type in the starting and destination
address among choosing the few options and reviewing the results/steps in a
text layout.

MapQuest has gone totally graphical, and their classic interface does not
exist anymore. So what else is there for us screen reader users? Anyone?
