Hi Everyone, Thanks to all for the suggestions and ideas.
Debby's instructions contained the solution that finally worked for me. Her reply is below in its entirety for those who would like to read it. However, let me say that I was only able to reach the format tab by forwarding the message (with the attachment) to myself. The message was, as Debby suspected, in rtf and so when I changed the format to html I was able to shift tab to the attachment area and open the attachment in the usual way.
