VLC is not half bad. If it ever delivers the promised Blu-Ray support, it'll rank as outstanding. It doesn't seem to have a resume option, but the menu system is elegant and simple. PowerDVD is better than it looks, if you read the help screens, especially on DVD's; with Blu-Ray, though, it's mouse click or bust. It could use a little more audio gain too.
