Just a thought, but all the information shared here is great. Is it ever
catalogued and carefully organized? Not just archived...that is cumbersome to
look through. I mean organized into a manual, Or a FAQ format?

Yes, boo on me! I should have cited page numbers instead, which I always made
headers. I recall they were simple--just set 'em up and leave 'em alone. It's
been a while since I've written anything for publication, but I'll bet I never
had to edit one.

Ted, these terms are so similar that I knew there'd be confusion. The query is
about footers, not footnotes. As I'm sure you know, a footer is where you might
have a page number, the name of the document's author, a chapter number, book
title, etc.

My experience is mainly with footnotes, and it's not too fresh, but I don't
remember it being that hard. When I wished to exit a footnote, I clicked into
the main body text--exactly where is not critical.

I?m glad. To be clear, in word 2010, that key combo takes you to the area for
both headers and footers. If you encounter more specific problems, post again.
I?ve been trying to figure all this out myself recently, so it?s somewhat fresh
in my head.

I'm looking to do both with the headers and footers. I definitely need to read
them to be sure I'm doing a specific type of document, but I also may need to
edit them in future. Thanks for the tip. I'll give it a try! I really
appreciate it.

I'm using 2010, so it may be different, but I get to headers and footers by
pressing alt-n for insert, then h. After that, it's a case of arrowing, tabbing
and pressing enter

Hello everyone,

I've just taken on a new client for transcription who uses headers and/or

quick tips and hints on how to easily work with these in MS Office 2013?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Hi Adrian,

Have you tried the, Find & Replace dialogue? Control + H, to open, in the
Find What field put in the page number, in the Replace With field leave
blank & then spacebar the replace button. I don't have a .docx file to play
with so, I can't test my idea.

One clarification. I discovered yesterday that the operation to remove
page numbers covers only one location at a time. So, if you have page
numbers at both the top right and bottom center, you need to identify a
location and perform the operation separately for each. Realistically, if
you can't see to determine whether and where you've set page numbers, you
need to perform the operation six times for every document: top left, center
and right, then bottom left, center and right.

Ludicrous. Surely one more reason why Cy calls the company Microbloat.

Subject: How to Confirm where page numbers appear in Word 2010?

Yesterday, I thought I'd removed page numbers from a document, but it
turned out I hadn't. As a result, when I added page numbers in a new
location, each page printed out with the number in the original and new
location. I can't figure out how to determine, without sighted assistance,
whether page numbers have stayed put in a document.

If that isn't clear, here are a few details. I've long placed page numbers
at the bottom center of each page. However, I've been convinced to put them,
instead, in the top right corner. I know how to perform each of these
operations. However, I need first to ensure that the mistaken page numbers
have been removed.

I also know how to remove page numbers. The problem here was that I didn't
realize I first needed to uncheck the "different page" setting for the first
page. So even though I correctly performed the operation to remove page
numbers, it didn't take. Now I know to uncheck that different page setting
first, but my mistake has caused confusion in several documents. I need to
know if page numbers have been set there and, if so, where.

 Any ideas?

Press Alt Down Arrow until you find the start of that paragraph.
Then press Insert Minus sign, or J
JAWS Key minus sign.
If the JAWS Cursor voice is not liked, press the Plus sign.

Page down key, until the mouse pointer is positioned where Jaws says the
article begins? Thanks for info.

   HI guys
The million-dollar question is, suppose my Mom wants me to look up
information about such medication, treatment etc., on Google; I tell her
I'd found it, but the tricky part is, how to sincronize Jaws, so that
when I put the mouse pointer on where the article starts, my Mom can
start reading using the mouse from there, rather than by having to move
the Page up or Page down key, until the mouse pointer is positioned

This could be caused by the mouse pad . It can be very sensitive.

Adrian, just a thought. Since page numbers actually are in the header or
footer, could you confirm it by viewing the header/footer dialogue with
Alt-V-H or the Jaws insert key and the number 1 on the numbers row?

Subject: How to Confirm where page numbers appear in Word 2010?

Yesterday, I thought I'd removed page numbers from a document, but it turned
out I hadn't. As a result, when I added page numbers in a new location, each
page printed out with the number in the original and new location. I can't
figure out how to determine, without sighted assistance, whether page
numbers have stayed put in a document.

Any ideas?

Jean,

Thanks so much. I didn't know about this set of keystrokes, alt-v, h. Yes, it
tells me if there's a page number in the header page by page. It also confirms
that there's no page number in the footer, or so I infer, because nothing is
verbalized there. It doesn't tell me whether the page number is at the left,
centered or on the right, but it does rule out the footer.

This is a much better way than I'd found before of reading headers in general.

Adrian,

Yes, you can confirm the placement. Once you go into the header or footer,
move to the item text using the arrow keys, and then press alt-delete to
hear the status location. Insert-F will also tell you formatting info, so
you should be able to hear alignment info that way as well.

Subject: Trouble with Dropdowns in Excel
Message-ID:
<[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

My desktop PC is running Windows 8.1 64-bit

I'm using JFW 16 and Office 2013. All Windows updates are current.

I've created an unprotected Excel workbook and create a dropdown list.

I hit alt-down arrow, and I hear blank.

I down arrow repeatedly and hear blank blank

However, if I then hit enter, one of the items from the dropdown list is
selected in the cell, so I know the dropdown is working.

This all started when I discovered that on my work computer running Windows
7 and Office 2010, I have no trouble reading dropdowns, but I do have
trouble on my home desktop computer, and also on my laptop which is running
Windows 7 and Office 2010.

My own computers are 64-bit, and I think my work computer may be 32-bit.
That's the only real difference I can think of.

I have found the same issue with JFW 15 and 16.

I welcome any suggestions.

Hi,

I've not used iTunes to remove an app, I usually just remove the ap
directly from my phone , but the new itumes takes a little getting used to.
the best advice I can give is press F6 until jaws announces you are in a
tree view, then use arrow keys to move up and down to find what you want
play list , music, iPhone etc. then press F6 once more, this takes you into
the playlist or whatever you just selected, then use tab to move to each
option such as the list of songs , play button etc. I've not tried it with
removing apps but have used it for adding songs to playlists so I'm
assuming its pretty much the same . if you wanted to remove the app
directly from your phone and didn't know how below are the details for
this. One thing to keep in mind with itunes that confused me for ages is
that there are 2 tree views, pressing f6 like I said takes you to the one
you want, if from that tree view you press tab though (instead of f6 again)
it takes you to another tree view that doesn't actually select anything
you'll know if you accidently end up in this one though as jaws says read
only when you're in this tree view that doesn't do anything . Hope that
last bit made sense

To remove an app directly from the phone hold your finger on the app for a
couple of seconds, it makes a noise indicating you are in edit mode then
just clicking the app as if you were trying to open the app and you get the
message asking if you want to delete the app. Then pressing the home button
when you've deleted the app take you back out of the edit mode

Hope this helps

Paul

Hi all. I'm thinking about upgrading to a new refurbished desktop computer
running Windows 7 Pro. I've provided a link listing many choices and am
wondering which one will work with the programs I currently use and which
versions; I use Jaws 9.0 because of its advantages with braille display
functionality in certain applications. One drawback with a higher version of
Jaws is in the configuration manager, shift+control+d doesn't take me to the
defaults, but opens up the My Documents folder, since that is the shortcut key
command I made for it. I heard that the new Blindtunes scripts only work with
Jaws 15 or higher. Will one of these computers be compatible with Jaws 9, 11
or 112, or should I purchase an upgrade to a higher version? What versions of
MSWord, Firefox, Duxbury, Internet Explorer, Winamp, Adobe Reader/Flash,
Windows Media Player, VLC, itunes/blindtunes will work on a Win7 Pro system?
I'm currently using Word 2003 and DBT 10.7, but will these work on the new
 system?
If the answer to any of the above is "yes", I'd like to know what size hard
drive and memory, and microprocessor speed, 32- or 64-bit, are required. Also
I need a computer with enough USB ports for my Focus 80 display, Deskjet
printer, parellel port for Juliet embosser, etc. Please advise the cost of a
computer that will work with all of the above applications and/or any necessary
updates. Thanks for your help checking out these computers and finding the
least expensive brand and/or one that will be most compatible with all my
favorite apps.

Not asking for much are you?
JFW 9 isn't going to work with Windows7 anyway or at the very least be very
problematic so that's a nonstarter for everything else.

Further, Microsoft is coming out with windows 10 next year, putting an
end to support for many of the software versions you currently use.

One drawback with a higher version
of Jaws is in the configuration manager, shift+control+d doesn't take me to
the defaults, but opens up the My Documents folder, since that is the
shortcut key command I made for it. I heard that the new Blindtunes
scripts
only work with Jaws 15 or higher. Will one of these computers be
compatible
with Jaws 9, 11 or 112, or should I purchase an upgrade to a higher
version?
What versions of MSWord, Firefox, Duxbury, Internet Explorer, Winamp, Adobe
Reader/Flash, Windows Media Player, VLC, itunes/blindtunes will work on a
Win7 Pro system? I'm currently using Word 2003 and DBT 10.7, but will
these
work on the new system?
If the answer to any of the above is "yes", I'd like to know what size hard
drive and memory, and microprocessor speed, 32- or 64-bit, are required.
Also I need a computer with enough USB ports for my Focus 80 display,
Deskjet printer, parellel port for Juliet embosser, etc. Please advise the
cost of a computer that will work with all of the above applications and/or
any necessary updates. Thanks for your help checking out these computers
and finding the least expensive brand and/or one that will be most
compatible with all my favorite apps.

You need to buy a computer that can handle most current applications and
devices even at the risk of some of them possibly not working with it. It's
impossible for anyone to answer all your questions here. However, when I
upgraded to Win7 two years ago, I found that almost everything still worked, if
sometimes with a bit of tweaking.

Someone else might address your braille printer concerns. However, I note that
FS has been touting its improved support of braille processors in JAWS 16. You
may now be able to upgrade from Version 9. The longer you stay with old
computers and old versions of JAWS, the harder you will find it. Going from XP
to Win7 improved my Internet experience immeasurably.

Hello,

Now that you have expressed your computer needs, What is your budget for a
computer? You can purchase a new desk top computer for under $700.00 even a
custom built one. Personally I would not buy a refurbished computer.

Well, not even IPhone read them properly. They just are identifiable

Is this a J16 bug or is there some setting I need to attend to?

On a related issue, how do you get page numbers to appear in a Word '13
document. I don't like a lot of clutter, but this is useful information.

Hi Adrian,

Have you tried the, Find & Replace dialogue? Control + H, to open, in the Find
What field put in the page number, in the Replace With field leave blank & then
spacebar the replace button. I don't have a .docx file to play with so, I
can't test my idea.

 Any ideas?

I have bought at least half a dozen refurbished computers over the past
couple 3 years or so and I haven't had any trouble or complaints from any of
them ...

Hello,

Now that you have expressed your computer needs, What is your budget for a
computer? You can purchase a new desk top computer for under $700.00 even a
custom built one. Personally I would not buy a refurbished computer.

Subject: requirements for refurbished desktop computers

One drawback with a higher version
of Jaws is in the configuration manager, shift+control+d doesn't take me to
the defaults, but opens up the My Documents folder, since that is the
shortcut key command I made for it. I heard that the new Blindtunes scripts
only work with Jaws 15 or higher. Will one of these computers be compatible
with Jaws 9, 11 or 112, or should I purchase an upgrade to a higher version?
What versions of MSWord, Firefox, Duxbury, Internet Explorer, Winamp, Adobe
Reader/Flash, Windows Media Player, VLC, itunes/blindtunes will work on a
Win7 Pro system? I'm currently using Word 2003 and DBT 10.7, but will these
work on the new system?
If the answer to any of the above is "yes", I'd like to know what size hard
drive and memory, and microprocessor speed, 32- or 64-bit, are required.
Also I need a computer with enough USB ports for my Focus 80 display,
Deskjet printer, parellel port for Juliet embosser, etc. Please advise the
cost of a computer that will work with all of the above applications and/or
any necessary updates. Thanks for your help checking out these computers
and finding the least expensive brand and/or one that will be most
compatible with all my favorite apps.

Kimsan,
I just had a memory flash. (LOLLOLLOL)
Under XP there was an application of sorts which would send and receive all
kinds of funny sounds and actions.
It seems to me that when I went to a W7 machine the app was not longer
available.

Hello,fellow listers.

I am a JAWS 15 user--in this case, running the most recent 64-bit
release of that edition;: 15.0.12085. Recently, I have taken a new
position as contractor for a firm that requested I purchase and use
Office 2013. While I was expecting some minor accessibility glitches,
what I have gotten today goes far beyond that: I cannot interact at
all with Outlook 2013 and JAWS.

With Word 2013 and Excel 2013, no accessibility problem of any sort
has manifested itself so far. But whenever I navigate to any open
Outlook screen--whether it's the Today screen or my e-mail inbox--JAWS
instantly shuts down due to an unidentified error. Just completely
shuts down--meaning that I have to re-start the program, which shuts
down once again as soon as I navigate back to Outlook.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate on a Dell M6400 laptop loaded with 8 GB of RAM.

Naturally, I phoned the FS Help Desk, but the support technician said
she is not familiar with such a drastic error. And while she is
recommending that I upgrade to Ver. 16, she does not believe that this
action in itself would necessarily overcome the crashes I experience
now every time.

Has anyone encountered this with Outlook 2013? Is there anything
specific I can do (as in the theme or background settings) to stop
this error sequence from happening again?

Kind regards,

-Kane

There was a couple of 15 upgrades that made Outlook 2013 unaccessible. I went
above 15.500 at home and it was fine. Are you using Home or Pro addition of
JFW? It makes a difference as your in Windows 7 Ultinate.

Kane,

Have you downloaded Jaws 16 as a demo and tried it?

Another question is what views are yo u defaulting to in Outlook 2013?

Are you using imap, Exchange, pop3?

I would be willing to work with you on this off list, see my contact info

Kane,

I haven't seen this particular problem though Outlook is crashy and
unstable on my win7 machine both at work and at home. I'm running jaws
15.0.9023. Maybe give that version a try. Also, have you considered
installing NVDA to use as a backup screen reader when jaws becomes
unresponsive? I wouldn't recommend it as a permanent replacement for
jaws, but it has gotten me out of a tight spot on many occasions.

Hello,

Here is some info that you might find helpful:
Subject: blind in medical billing and coding

Hello,

Do contact my colleague Detra Bannister
[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>, who oversees
some of our CareerConnect employment program,
www.afb.org/cc<http://www.afb.org/cc>. The web site
contains a wealth of information about employment for visually impaired job
seekers as well as employers who are interested in hiring someone with a
disability. A huge section of the site is our mentor database where you can
search for blind people living across the country who are employed in the
medical billing and coding careers. And, do ask Detra for assistance in
locating some if need be.

Also, for textbooks, have you tried Bookshare,

Hello,

Here is an article on pivot tables using a screen reader. Hope this will be
of help to you.

Yes it is accessible (without a sample excel file it's hard to
explain, but I'll try).
For example There's a worksheet that contains a detailed study of your
client base such as their demographics, their income level, product
preference, buying pattern etc and let's say this whole data runs over
some 4000 rows, but you're only interested in finding out just the
average income level of your clients by region.
This is one of the reasons why you may want to use the pivot table
feature.

To creat a pivot table:
1.go to the top left cornor of the data (for example, A1)
2.Go to insert pivot table or pivot chart pivot table (Alt n, v, enter)
3.confirm the selection (something like $A$1:$S$4000) and press enter
4.By default the pivot table gets created in a new worksheet and the
cursor lands in A3. Press F6 to move to the field list box where you
can select what needs to be put in rows, what needs to be put in
columns, and what needs to go as value.
for example, select "region" as row then "income Level" as value.
5.Press shift f6 to go back to the newly designed pivot table, then
verify that the values in the table are summarised correctly ( sum /
count / average)
6.if you wish to summarise the value in a different manner, then go
to the first cell of the value and then activate the context menu and
then select the appropriate option in the "summarish

Here's a suggestion. I use Word 2010, where page numbering is handled mostly by
the insert ribbon and to some extent the references ribbon. Go to Google and
see if you can get an answer there for 2007 using some of these terms.

Hi Ted, I couldn't find it in either Page Setup or Page Layout.
Remember, if you are using a later version than 2007 things changed a
bit so I'm specifically looking for it in Office/Word 2007.

Anyone else have a suggestion on where to look?

True, but they haven't messed with this stuff much since the ribbon was added.
I've e used 2007, 2010, and now 2013; trouble is I don't do the kind of
expository writing I once did. As I said the other day, I always created page
numbers as headers. You even have the option to use either Arabic or Roman.

Ted

Hi, Everyone.
Do any versions of JFW work with MsAccess 2013? I'd like to take a
class to learn to use the program and am wondering whether it will be
accessible with JFW.
Thanks,
Dani

Good evening,

I have a mis-spelled word in the custom dic that I have tried removing once
before and am not succeeding.

If somebody can assist me in removing that one word which is a typo but it
tries to work its way into some of my docs when I do spell check.

Thank you and Happy Holidays to all,

Have a great day,

Paul Bolduc
