I've experimented with Mozilla Thunderbird under Linux; I think it's also accessible under Winodws and might be worth trying. I think it's a relatively good client, but not the best. My favourite is still Mutt, but I haven't checked whether there's a version for Windows. Note that if you need integration with the Microsoft Exchange calendar, Outlook is your best option.
