My perfectly wonderful Outlook 2010 running on my Windows 8.1
machine just blew up. I'm sure it is some view setting, but for
the life of me I cannot find it.

When Outlook used to come up, the inbox was the default view.
Using up and down arrows would read the message subject (and
possibly the sender too). Now, JAWS says, when I overtly press
the inbox key (either control plus 1 or control plus shift plus i)
I hear "Outlook Data File."

When Outlook starts, however, I hear Day View.

The JAWS manual says no special settings are needed for Outlook
2010, but I think something like this happened to me before. It
was a bear to fix it.

This is my home machine. So, I have no IT department to help.

I can send messages OK. I just cannot read messages, except on my
iPhone.
