Thanks to all who made suggestions. The problem is solved.

The problem wasn't the view, the preview pane, or anything like
that.

Somehow (and I still have no idea how), Outlook was coming up
reading its so-called "Data File," which is not where all the good
stuff (like email messages) is stored. None of the normal in-box
commands worked, e.g., control plus 1 or control plus shift plus
i).

I felt a little better when our IT staff was stumped. Well, they
were stumped for about 45 minutes.

Here is what to look for.

If Outlook ever comes up saying "Outlook Data File," and I'm
betting it will some day, you know immediately that there is a
problem. When you go to your in-box, you will hear nothing. In
fact, you will see nothing either, and there is no way to get the
in-box to appear while in this "Data File" mode.

You can double-check the problem exists by pressing JAWS key plus
t (to read the window title). Do this when you think you are in
the in-box.

If it says "Outlook Data File," you have confirmed the problem.
You will never hear a message. In fact, none appears on the
screen.

Here is the fix.

Switch to JAWS cursor (you cannot get there any other way).

Get the JAWS cursor near the bottom of the window (pgdn key with
desktop keyboard), and then arrow up. When you hear something
that sounds like your email address (in my case,
[email protected]), use the right mouse click button. The
applications key might work too, but I've not verified that.

This right click will give you a menu. Use the arrow keys to go
up and down the menu until you get to an obvious choice. As I'm
typing this, I cannot remember the choice, but the others are
obviously wrong.

So, now I can hear all my email messages again!

Yippee!!
