Hello Adrian, and the List

This email response by me confirms your first issue. I will tell my blind
friend to be aware.

Your second issue is really a feature of MS-Outlook (probably of other email
programs also). Here is the rule:
If you reply/forward to a message that is located in any folder other than
the Inbox, your copy of that email will be saved in that same folder, no
matter who it is addressed to.
If the original message is in the Inbox-Folder, reply/forwards will go the
Sent-Items Folder.

Subject: Accidents involving this list

Two issues involving accidentally and intentionally private posts surface
this morning. In case that sounds weird, read on.

First, I thought I was the only one who had the problem that messages
intended for the list were also going to the people who posted the preceding
post. I see now that I'm not. Since I recognized the problem several months
ago, I try to make a habit of checking the "To" line before posting. Often
the previous poster's address appears there, in which case I delete it. The
quick way to get to that line is to press alt-3 (above the letters) twice
rapidly.

Note. Usually the JFW list address appears there, too, but not always. Even
so, When I click on "Reply," it goes to the list anyway. This suppressed JFW
address contributes to confusion.

The second issue is the experience some of us have had of private messages
seemingly appearing on the list. I once had this impression when I sent an
off-list message to another member. when I checked the folder set aside for
incoming JFW messages, I was mortified to find my private message there and
not in my regular inbox.

It turned out my message hadn't posted to the list. I found out when the
other member told me it had gone to his inbox and not the list.
My filter had picked up on a JFW reference and directed the copy of my sent
message to my JFW folder.

So, if you think a private message has gone public, first double-check if
your filter terms might have misled your email client into putting the copy
of your sent message in the wrong folder.
