I recommend following these steps: 1. Highlight the text you wish to change to a different color. 2. Press the alt key to open the ribbon. 3. Type the following key sequence: h f c (without the spaces). 4. Use the arrow keys to select the color you want. 5. Press enter to save your changes and return to the document.
The above instructions are for Word 2013; I've never used 2010. However, the two versions work similarly, so I think these steps should work. I hope this helps.
