On the combobox widget on this page:
http://test.cita.illinois.edu/aria/combobox/combobox2.php#lsc
there is an input field into which you can type, and as you type it updates
a list of matching items below the field. This widget is marked up with
ARIA so that it supposedly works with programs like JAWS.
When I try to use JAWS (version 16, with IE 11) on it, and tab to the
field, I hear "State edit contains text type in text." ("State" is the
field label.) I am not told there is a list associated with the field.
When I activate the list and the list shows, the list is not read, though
when I use the arrow keys, each item I go to with the arrow keys is read.
So, several questions:
1) Shouldn't a screen reader be announcing that the combobox has a list?
2) Should the screen reader read all the list items when they appear on the
screen?
3) Is there another page which works better with JAWS? (I am particularly
interested in this kind of widget, where there is an input field, and a
list of matching options that appears.)
Thanks,
