Actually, I'd recommend not bothering with this test, but going ahead as Mike explains. The test for a pre-existing shortcut isn't reliable. I remember being stumped when a shortcut key I created wouldn't work. I had to go through a lengthy process to determine that either I or some application had previously created that same shortcut, even though it wasn't triggering any action. Jennifer will find out soon enough if the control--alt-j combo doesn't bring up JAWS, in which case it will be time for her to follow your suggesting here.
One suggestion I have for Mike's step 5. All you had to do here is press escape to get out of the dialog. Going to the applications key sometimes used to have the opposite of the intended effect. I don't know if that's still true because I've used the escape key for step 5 ever since when creating a JAWS shortcut, and it works. I'd also recommend a reboot after creating this shortcut. It seems to help it stick. Jennifer, apologies if we're making this seem too complicated. Mike's explanation and steps are exactly right. If for some reason you can't get them to work for you, at least you have some backup ideas. -----Original Message----- From: Jfw [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Nicole Massey via Jfw Sent: Friday, April 24, 2015 4:59 PM To: 'The Jaws for Windows support list.' Cc: Nicole Massey Subject: RE: Jaws question, Assigning A Shorcut Keystroke You left out a step. 0. Press Control+Alt+J and find out what comes up. If nothing starts from this key combination then move on to the next steps. If something does open up then you need to clear that shortcut assignment from the application before continuing with the process, otherwise something else will start and Jaws won't at least some of the time. > -----Original Message----- > From: Jfw [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Michael > B. via Jfw > Sent: Friday, April 24, 2015 3:55 PM > To: The Jaws for Windows support list. > Cc: Michael B. > Subject: Re: Jaws question, Assigning A Shorcut Keystroke > > Hi Jennifer, > > To shut down Jaws the keystrokes are, Insert / Jaws Key + F4, then > Enter or, Insert / Jaws Key, Windows Key, + F4.
