I prefer control-F6 to take me off the address bar because the action takes me to the page's contents in all situations.

However, control+o sometimes works when control+l does not. I experience this difference when hooking into a local address, as opposed to one on the Net, such as when a certain friend gives me access to their computer to upload a big file. So, if control+l ever fails, try control+o. I agree with those who reserve alt-d for isolating and copying webpage addresses. F6 also gets you there, but it cycles through three options, while alt-di just gives you the webpage's address.
