They can be internal or external, but serve the most benefit as your primary internal boot device. This is the most common configuration. On a laptop, you would normally want an internal solid state drive, with an external traditional hard drive for data. I hope this helps.

My laptop and my office desktop both have solid state drives. They are
wonderful! JAWS has no difficulty with them at all. in fact, I think I
