Hi,
I dislike the so-called virtual ribbons for that very reason and encourage
all of my students to avoid using virtual ribbons like the plague. All they
do is isolate you from the interface that's intended by Microsoft, key tips
and all. The virtual ribbons, in my view, were designed to satisfy the
needs of those users who were resistant to switching from the old-style
drop-down menus and submenus of Office 2003 and who had a knee-jerk reaction
to an entirely new interface that, in my opinion, has worked quite well
since Office 2007 was released and has, also in my opinion, stood the test
of time.

Paul,
I believe you are correct. You cannot have both. I personally do not like
the Virtual menus, because they do not support first-letter navigation as
do
standard menus. Therefore I stick to the ribbon and just learn how to use
it.

Thanks, everyone.
Now here's a slightly related question. MS has their own keyboard
interface
for the ribbon UI, as in "Alt then H, O, I". But you can also turn on the
JAWS rinnon UI to make the ribbon feel more like a system of menus and
submenus. I can see how both might be useful, but they seem to be mutually
exclusive. When I turn on the JAWS ribbon UI, the MS ribbon keyboard
inbterface seems to stop working.
Does anyone know how to set up JAWS so that both the MS interface and the
JAWS interface to the ribbon UI are available? Then I could choose to use
one or the other interface, depending on which is most convenient,
personal
preference, etc.
My guess is that this is simply not possible. I have to choose one or the
other.
