I am trying to burn Cds with WMP. I have all my CDs on an external
hard drive. I used WMP to rip them onto the hard drive. When ripping thru
WMP it placed all albums in correct catagories and named each track. I can
look at it thru Explorer and see that all is correct.
The problem arises when I attempt to burn a CD from my library.
When pulling up a CD while in WMP I often get "Unknown Artist" instead of a
name, which I know is correct on the hard drive. Microsoft tells me that
the info is being updated when I bring up an album. With the info already
on the hard drive, why does it need to be updated? When ripping it takes
only about 5 minutes to rip and name. MS says it could take a "week" to
update while burning. How is best way to fix this problem, if any?

This might help. Try changing verbosity settings for your browser
Jawskey+f6 gives different options than jawskey+v.
Configure Verbosity Levels
Items to Be Spoken
uncheck Document Name
Try other settings.

For Me, Jawskey plus F6 just gives a listing of headings, if there are any
on the webpage, when I am in the browser.

Hi again, Robert. Did you perhaps mean Jawskey plus the number 6 on the
numbers row, instead of Jawskey plus F6?

Subject: Mozilla Firefox Add-ons with JAWS?
Message-ID: <[email protected]>
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"; Format="flowed"
Does anybody know how to actually use Add-ons in Firefox? Sure, I can
install the add-ons, and I can go to the Add-on manager to enable,
disable, or remove them. But how do you actually get to them without a
mouse and a set of functioning eyes? I've Googled and Googled, and all I
find is that I'm supposed to use something called an Add-on Bar. Wish I
could find one. I've tabbed until my tab key almost went on strike from
abuse, and I don't see anything like that. Going to the View, Toolbars,
option doesn't allow me to choose Add-on bar. I found a shortcut key,
Control /, that's supposed to turn the Add-on bar on or off, but I don't
know if mine's on or off, because I can't find it before or after I
press Control /
Any bright ideas? I installed an Add-on and it's functioning, but I'm
supposed to be able to configure its options, and well, yeah, no, not so
much.
Thanks,
Brad

Seems I am having the same issues. I have asked for information on how to
change my preferences, and have received no response. I am considering
canceling this subscription ? but, how do I do it.

As I said, I would rather fix this problem so that I don't get so many
emails all at the same time.
If I cannot find out how to do that, I will on subscribe using the method
that you have outlined.

Hi, Brad. I use Firefox with JAWS13. I only have one AddOn which has
options. This is Navigational Sounds. Here is what I do to reach the options
for Navigational Sounds within Firefox.
1. Start Firefox.
2. Press the ALT key and Right Arrow over to Tools.
3. Down Arrow to AddOns, and press Enter.
4. Turn off the Virtual Cursor by pressing Jawskey plus the letter Z.
5. Tab once to reach a listbox containing the following menu items:
A. Get AddOns
B. Extensions
c. Appearance
d. PlugIns
e. Services
6. The AddOn for which you want to configure the options will probably be
found in either:
B. Extensions
or
e. Services
7. Arrow up or down through the various AddOns found in these lists.
8. Once you find The right AddOn in the list, Make sure the Virtual Cursor
is still off.
9. Arrow up and down a couple of times to make sure the AddOn is selected.
10. Press Enter on the appropriate AddOn.
11. You will know if the press of the Enter key takes effect or not, because
when it does, JAWS will say, "Read Only".
12. Tab several times, and you may see links to the person who created the
AddOn.
13. Finally you may see an Options Button. Use Space Bar to press this
button.
14. As you use the Tab key, there will be a list of options to configure.
15. Once you have configured the AddOn's options (usually with check boxes,
but also can be with Combo Boxes), Press CONTROL plus W to close the AddOns
Manager Window.
16. The AddOn should now be properly configured.

Thanks, Bill. I did that (and just did it again following your
instructions), and it does let me choose whether to autoupdate the
add-on or not, and it gives me buttons to disable or remove the add-on.
But there's a whole interface I'm supposed to be able to manipulate that
I can't get to. I think if I can get someone sighted to click on the
add-on icon on the toolbar, I can move it to the menu bar, and then I
might be able to access it. There's apparently a little stopsign looking
icon that sighted people can get to, so when somebody's here I'll try
that. You apparently can't do it with JAWS because the toolbar is a row
of icons with no labels that I never knew existed (virtual cursor can't
even find it).
Thanks anyway. This was fun.

I added another add-on to Firefox called Classic Theme Restorer, which
gave the toolbars an option to show text labels instead of icons. This
did solve the problem of not being able to find the Add-On I had first
installed. I did have to use the instructions previously provided on
this list to allow the virtual cursor to work, but that was no problem.
So now I can find the icon on the "toolbar", but when I click it, JAWS
just kind of shuts up. So although I got access to the add-on icon, the
add-on itself is not accessible, and it seems to be that way for many of
the add-ons including the ones that came with Firefox. I clicked on
something called "Hello", and then couldn't do anything with that
either. Now Classic Theme Restorer I could read.
In short, install whatever add-ons you want, but it's anybody's guess
whether you'll be able to do anything with them. That's what I learned
today.

The latest update seems to have fixed some of the keyboard navigation
problems intruded in the previous update. In particular; f6 is now
working more as expected. Also, tabbing through the interface does not
read every label and every control. That was a pain.
Still needs work but not quite the mess it was.
No improvement in the get info screen. Still hard to move through some
long lists. Still no hot keys in some areas.

Hi, Brad. I sort of misunderstood the problem you are having. The
instructions I gave you are for options that determine how the AddOn works
with firefox. If the AddOn itself is inaccessible, there isn't really much
you can do, no matter what browser you are using. This is because it isn't
the settings for the AddOn in Firefox which aren't accessible, it is the
AddOn itself.
An example of this is Flash Player by Adobe. You can install the AddOn, and
you can even use some of its features when you click on a media stream that
uses Flash Player. But once Flash Player is started, there are many buttons
and labels within the program which are not visible to JAWS.
Sorry I couldn't help more with your problem.

There are 3 reasons to add a script as a user setting (instead of a shared
setting), at least 3 that I can think of.
1. If you have more than one user on your computer and they all want
different scripts for the same apps. Seems unlikely.
2. If your computer just has one user: You. In that case, it doesn't matter
if you add the script as a user setting or a shared setting.
3. If you plan to move to a new computer someday, some migration tools make
it easy to copy your settings to the new computer. Some of these tools
aren't so great at migrating shared settings.
In my case, I'm the only user on my machine, so I just add them as user
settings. I don't think I mess with shared settings at all. Lots of stuff
does end up getting added to shared settings (non-JAWS stuff), and I think
that happens automatically when various software gets installed.

I went to the scripts page and, it told me about blind tunes for itunes from
doitblind.com.
I think it was Wednesday or Thursday when I purchased them. It said that I
would receive an unlock code with in 24 hours. Is there another way to get
the scripts?

Yes, I think it works both ways. I'm the only user on this machine, so I
can't confirm but putting the files in either MySettings or SharedSettings
seemed to do the trick.
Thanks again for the help.

I always put scripts into shared settings. It has lots more files than
'explore my settings' ... and it works. It may be that both ways work,
though. Try it and let us know????

I haven't looked at that particular page so I can't say much about it. Have
you tried the page with a different browser? I normally use Internet
Explorer but sometimes if a page doesn't do well, I'll switch to firefox and
be able to use it just fine so you might try something like that.

The latest update seems to have fixed some of the keyboard navigation
problems intruded in the previous update. In particular; f6 is now working
more as expected. Also, tabbing through the interface does not read every
label and every control. That was a pain.
Still needs work but not quite the mess it was.
No improvement in the get info screen. Still hard to move through some long
lists. Still no hot keys in some areas.

Plantronics does this. I have a set. One side specific for the computer
voice, the other has both the earpiece and the boom mike for telephone work.

I just spoke with them. The lady I got didn't think at first that this one
did two sources at all, but I had her look at the features part. She said
that they have no 3.5mm connection adapter for the phone side, but she said
she would email their shipping people to see if they can get such a thing.
So much for Plantronics telling me that no such product existed.

We needed to call them this morning, because my Num Lock kept knocking on.
We got Eric, and he was as nice as Customer Service there has been to me in

I went to the scripts page and, it told me about blind tunes for itunes from
doitblind.com.
I think it was Wednesday or Thursday when I purchased them. It said that I
would receive an unlock code with in 24 hours. Is there another way to get
the scripts?

The Amplifier is for the phone itself. The Amp plugs into where the handset
would be, and you run the headset that way. I've used it before, and they
work Ok.

I am surprised Plantronics never mentioned that one. Maybe there isn't a way
to have a 3.5mm 4-ring plug for the phone end. I don't care at all about the
play and fastforward buttons. I wonder why one needs an amplifier at all
unless you were hearing impaired.

This was an interesting discussion. I have a solution that's not very
elegant but it works.
I have a wired earphone that plugs into my computer and I place the
earbud in one ear. Then I have a Bluetooth headset connected too the
iPhone with the earbud in my other ear. I use it for listening to
music while I work, but it also works for phone calls.
As I said, not elegant but it works.

Used one of those, and it worked pretty well. Ai scrapped it because it was
really uncomfortable on one side, and your ear wound up looking as if you'd
gone 12 rounds.

Idea: I don't know enough to do this but would like to have some kind of
universal table data chart graphing trending display. Idealy tactile but
also how to make accessible in computers via audio.
Perhaps if I bought MS Office but which one? Don't like ribbons at all.
I want to find out if this is a good or bad time to buy silver.
I look at the graphs on some web pages but they are not often in
accessible table format with clear headings. In fact. I haven't found one.
I suppose this can be done in XL but have never learned it and I don't
have it. I also have no web building skills.

I found a guy on Thumbtack that claims to be able to whip up a cable that
would let me use any headset mic with those combination jacks Apple and
other phones like to use now. I'm surprised even Plantronics didn't know
there was such a thing, claiming the stuff they knew of was like an a/b
switch. I remember one time when I did some transcription during school
where I tried two headphones, and one busted right in half. What I tried to
do was using two pairs of earphones, with the one behind's left earpiece
pushed out of the way to get the front one to sit there.

More to my point. Are there financial market analysis tools a blind
person can learn to use? I haven't done math in years and don't know
anything about the market. I haven't bothered to learn as it seems most
of the tools are quite visual. Plus it is hard for me to keep numbers
in my head.
It occurs to me that a refreshable braille display would be very
helpful. However, I don't have one as I've not really need. That would
be a large investment for this project.
What I need to know is if there are accessible tools I can use right now
with Jaws.
Thanks.
