Asterisks are only necessary when you want to define a root word, and various 
derivatives.  For instance, pronouncing e-mail or e-mails or e-mailing without 
the hyphen looks like this:

Also note that if what you are searching on includes punctuation you can often 
get away with breaking the entry there.

For instance, in windows programming there are a great many 'words' of the form 
XX_COMBINEDWORDS, and often the same COMBINEDWORDS will appear to the right of 
many different XX_ tags. You can then make dictionary entries for just  the 
COMBINEDWORDS (leaving off the leading tag) and jaws will correctly use the 
replacement for the trailing portion regardless of the leading tag.
