As I recall either 38 or 39 had a major security fix for a problem. Can't remember what it was, but it made the news, and they really encouraged people to upgrade. By the time I heard about it, mine had already updated.

There is a common misconception that every time a browser is updated, its security features are also updated. But this is not necessarily the case. I think Mozilla keeps updating Firefox to fix bugs that it created in the first place. I don't think FF 40 is necessarily more secure than FF 35, but if you are uncomfortable using FF 35, that's for you to decide. My understanding is that FF 40 added enhancements for improved compatibility with Windows 10, which may explain why it is more sluggish and vulnerable to freezes and crashes than previous versions which are not Win 10 compatible. The advantage of installing the portable version of FF 35 is that if you decide not to use it, you can simply revert to using FF 40 as you see fit. No harm, no foul.

This is tempting. But I believe Mozilla enhances security support with each version, so by working with an older version, do we risk exposure to online nastiness?

You can download Firefox 35 portable and other earlier versions of Firefox from the following web site. Just download the version you want and save it someplace that is easy to find. Because this is a portable version, it does not install permenantly on your PC like the full version, but runs as a .exe
file. You can pin the .exe file to the start menu so that you can easily
launch it . I find Firefox 35 to be much more stable and JAWS friendly than
FF 40. Mozilla keeps tinkering with Firefox to the detriment of screen
reader users like us.

Hi Gerald,

I didn’t know that you could have multiple versions of Firefox installed.
Where would I find the version 35? I think if I can find an earlier version,
I’ll simply uninstall version 40.

Cheers,

Russell

Yes, I have noticed the same behavior with Firefox 40, and it seems to
crash or freeze more frequently than previous versions. I'm so fed up
with Firefox 40 that I installed the portable version of Firefox 35, which
seems to be more stable andJAWS friendly. Keep in mind that unlike IE,
you can have multiple versions of Firefox on your PC simultaneously.

I am finding that Firefox 40 keeps switching from one open tab to another without me doing anything but reading a page. It’s quite annoying. It also
takes a very long time to load some web pages.

Is anyone else finding Firefox switching tabs on its own?

Thanks,

Russell

Hello, everyone.

Typically, with Firefox, I use the control L command, after which I can
paste a web site address into the edit box, and hit enter. I'm then able
to
open The web site from that point.

However, I'm finding that the control L command no longer works with
Firefox 40.

Has anyone noticed this change, and are there good work-arounds?

I have gotten to the point where I actually prefer Firefox to Internet
Explorer for accessing and navigating web sites, so this apparent change
in
Firefox behavior is somewhat disconcerting.

I'm using Jaws 16 and Windows 7 here.

Thank you.
