Daniel, if you go into JAWS Verbosity, Insert V. Arrow down about 17 times. You'll get to Virtual ribbon. I think that default is unchecked. Mine is unchecked, and I intend to leave it that way. I tried checking it, and didn't seem to manage as well. Four weeks ago, I made the big leap from XP, Outlook Express and Office 2003 to Windows 10, Outlook 2013 and Office 2013. I have said that I've fooled with enough ribbons to make one mighty bow.

Up to September of 2011, I was using Windows XP with Microsoft Office and JAWS 4.5. My current desktop, purchased 4 years ago, has Windows 7 and I have Microsoft Office 2010 with JAWS 14. During these 4 years, I have never disabled, nor enabled, Virtual Ribbons. Whatever the default setting is when you install JAWS is what I have been functioning with. Even after you, and others, have replied to my inquiry, I still do not know what Virtual Ribbons is or what it does or does not do. Probably never will. However, I will not quit trying. Thanks so much for your reply. Cc: Dave Carlson Subject: Re: Use of virtual ribbons and keyboard manager Daniel, The Virtual Ribbon gives the look and feel of the traditional menu structure that existed before the Ribbon was introduced. It is a band-aid approach to hiding the Ribbon behind a similar interface. However the Virtual ribbon does not have the quick key capability that existed in the old traditional menus, so it's not an exact replacement. If you've become familiar with the Ribbon structure, you're probably better off not bothering with the virtual ribbon. Another problem is that if you should be using another computer for a time, such as in a library, and you are using virtual ribbons, you're going to be hampered by not having that crutch available. And the virtual ribbon is only a JAWS artifact, so NVDA and Window-Eyes would not have it, to the best of my knowledge. And I for one see no point in being able to switch back/forth between them as a toggle function; you either use them or you don't. But that's just my opinion, which is subject to criticism.\ Dave Carlson Oregonian, woodworker, Engineer, Musician, and pioneer ----- Original Message ----- From: "Daniel McBride via Jfw" <[email protected]> To: "'The Jaws for Windows support list.'" <[email protected]> Cc: "Daniel McBride" <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, September 05, 2015 12:54 PM Subject: RE: Use of virtual ribbons and keyboard manager Just curious. What is the function of the Virtual Ribbons. Why would someone want Virtual Ribbons on, and why would someone want Virtual Ribbons off? I have never understood Virtual Ribbons and what it does. Arrow way down past to User Beginning or Intermediate or Advanced, right or not far after that, you'll come to Virtual Ribbon. You can check or uncheck it, whichever you prefer. Now I am trying to use a keystroke to switch the use of virtual ribbons, but when I look for use of virtual ribbons or something like that, it doesn't appear in the default list. There is a way to switch the virtual ribbons on or off through a keystroke? Maybe through a script, but I have no idea what is the function to switch the virtual ribbon function on/off. Thanks for any help. _______________________________________________ Jfw mailing list [email protected] http://lists.the-jdh.com/mailman/listinfo/jfw_lists.the-jdh.com _______________________________________________ Jfw mailing list [email protected] http://lists.the-jdh.com/mailman/listinfo/jfw_lists.the-jdh.com _______________________________________________ Jfw mailing list [email protected] http://lists.the-jdh.com/mailman/listinfo/jfw_lists.the-jdh.com _______________________________________________ Jfw mailing list [email protected] http://lists.the-jdh.com/mailman/listinfo/jfw_lists.the-jdh.com _______________________________________________ Jfw mailing list [email protected] http://lists.the-jdh.com/mailman/listinfo/jfw_lists.the-jdh.com _______________________________________________ Jfw mailing list [email protected] http://lists.the-jdh.com/mailman/listinfo/jfw_lists.the-jdh.com
