IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol. The practical application for using IMAP is when you have two computers on which you want to view the same email messages. If you leave your messages in your inbox while using IMAP, you will be able to view the messages in that inbox with a second device like a second computer. If you use POP3, once you download the messages on the first computer, they cannot be downloaded and viewed on the second computer using an email client like Outlook, Thunderbird, or Windows Live. You can still log onto the server using the web, via an Internet browser, and view your messages that way, whether you use POP3 or IMAP. One big difference between IMAP and POP3 is that, if you delete messages out of your inbox with IMAP, you actually delete them from the server, and they are really, really gone. If you are using POP3, if you delete them out of the inbox, you can still log onto the server using an Internet browser and view the messages, as long as you have your POP3 setup set to leave a copy on the server. I hope this helps you.
