OCR and PDF files/images

Is there any way that a third-party OCR package
can be used effectively with Acrobat and/or to read PDF files?  Those Acrobat
plug-ins are really a pain.  It would be nice if JFW had the OCR
technology built in to read non-text images that are displayed on the screen, but
can these packages be used in conjunction with JFW to make all screen-displayed text
(whether text or bit-mapped) readable by the blind?
