Dear sir,
thank you for understanding my original questions. The use of "the
left column reading feature" can be found in the IE 4.01 help items by going
there and doing "Inserrt F1 F1".
I agree with you. I have been trying to use that feature for a long
time. I asked the questions, because I don't understand why those key
commands--"Control + Numpad 4" and "Control + DownArrow" are included--if
people can't use them intuitively.
Also I thought that one would naturally use the JAWs cursor in IE 5
since I found it helpful in IE 4.01. Please understand I do not as yet have
3.3 but eagerly anticipate its arrival since I have a sma to get it sent to
me.
But the point is in IE 5 in Windows 95 when i use the JAWs cursor on a
web page and downarrow to a link and then use the correct numpad slash, the
web pagedisappears and i am wherever I was before launching that web page. I
have done the same thing about 20 times and I know this does happen. I have
checked and rechecked my settings for internet explorer; and they are all
correctly set.
    Perhaps 3.3 will correct this.
It would be marvelous--returning to your first helpful comment on
the"left column feature" --if some one could get it working. I must read
pages with 2 side by side columns. to amuse a few people, may I relate a fun
experience. i was reading about Network Associates in the left-hand column
which ended on the words"is buying"; and the right hand column began with
the word "Microsoft". So because of the reading which blends text in
columns, the reading went as follows"Network Associates is buying ....
Microsoft". I of course heard only the minimal pause and no "...". But the
point is that the left-hand column feature would have kept the column
reading separate and would have left poor Microsoft (poor Microsoft?)
untouched.
I believe that JAWS has superior features over other screen readers and
that is why i bought it. But other readers may be closing the gap in terms
of reading side by side text columns with "greater ease". I hear it obth
ways and I will believe it (when I see it). but the reading of columns could
be improved; hence i kept stupidly trying to use that keystroke for column
reading included in the Help for IE 4.01.
And so that no ne gets offended, I am only suggesting that a short
series of"how to get to and read" a few links on a short web page would edo
wonders to helping people who first buy JAWs and also may be new to the net.
If i had a dollar for the time I have spent trying to figure out the best
methods, I'd buy lunch.
And i do thank certain people who have posted specific information on
basic web page reading. When 3.3 comes out with the training tapes, then
perhaps people will update that in terms of using IE 5 and 3.3 in 95 and 98.
For example, I,
Sir, do appreciate your commment on the fact that you don't have to use the
JAWS cursor in IE 5. that specific information will help me when I receive
my 3.3 CD and my tapes in the mail.
    thanks to all.
