Okay gang,
I am going to attempt an explanation of how to create a message rule in ie5.
It's not simple, and I'm not a very good word smith, but let's give it a go.
Creating Message Rules in OE5:
Before we get started, let me explain that this procedure is very
nonstandard, and therefore, you should not expect jaws to act in a standard
way. For example, when you check something, jaws will not say "checked".
We are blazing new territory here, and if we expect our screen reader to act
normally in an abnormal window, we are just going to get frustrated. I
haven't seen every dialog that this rules thing can throw at us, and your
system may act differently than mine. Well, you too can be a pioneer and
tell the rest of us what you did to achieve the desired result. Now, with
that caviat, let's go create a rule:
Rules are merely a list of conditions you want to check, and a list of
actions you wish to perform when the conditions are true. For example, if
you want to select messages from the jfw list and place them in a separate
folder, then your condition is "when the from line contains the jfw mailing
list" and your action is to place that message in the jfw folder. So,
here's how it's done.
1. Press insert+t for the tools menu.
2. Press R for message rules.
3. Press M for Mail messages. (Note: I think that this may not be
necessary if you aren't using oe as a news reader too.) If it isn't
necessary, you will be placed in a dialog for creating your message rule
once you've typed R for message rules.
4. Press tab and go to the "new" button, and press enter.
Now you are in the dialog box that creates a rule.
5. The first list is a list of conditions for which you are to select one
or more conditions that meet your specifications.
Let's say that you want to pick out all messages that go to the jfw list
and place them in the jfw folder.
The first condition is "where the from line contains people", and that's
the one you want, so press the space bar. If you wanted other conditions,
then you would use the up and down arrow to get to them and press the space
bar next to the ones you want.
6. Press the tab key to go to the second list, the actions list.
find the entry that says "move it to the specified folder" (that's what
you want to do) so press the spacebar to check it.
7. Press the tab key and go to the rules description. Here's where the fun
begins.
If the first two boxes were filled in correctly (it took me a week to
correctly do the first two boxes), then your rule, as specified so far, will
be presented on separate lines for each specification you made.
The first line says "apply this rule after the message arrives" and I don't
think you can change any of this line.
8. Press the down arrow key and your rule should say, "where the from line
contains people". Some of these words are highlited. (I think there is
only one word per line), and you need to find it. So, turn your jaws cursor
on, and on each word press the insert+f keys to find out the font of that
word. If it isn't the word you are interested in it will only say "ms san
serif". When you hit a word that says "ms san serif underlined highlited",
then you've hit pay dirt. Press the insert+numpad* key to do a left mouse
click on it. Turn your pc cursor back on.
9. You will be placed in a dialog that allows you to specify the specific
condition or action you wish. For example, you can specify the jfw user
list as your "specified people" in your condition. Or, you can specify the
jfw folder in your "specified folder". I can't describe each kind of dialog
that will come up, because I haven't seen them all. You'll have to work
your way through this one, ending up at okay, which will bring you back to
our rules dialog.
10. Do a down arrow to the next line key to get to the next condition or
action. Follow the procedure outlined in step 8 once more to select the
specifications in this action or condition and, if necessary, perform step 9
once more.
11. Perform steps 8 through 10 repeatedly until you've exhausted your
conditions and actions.
12. Press the tab key, and you will get a chance to name your rule.
13. Tab to okay and press enter.
You've run the gauntlet and successfully created a rule.
Hope this helps.
Bob
