Hi, All,

I promised Monday to send this to people who wanted it, but after getting
a number of requests, I decided to forward it to the list. I tried twice,
but it disappeared into cyberspace. This time I'm pasting it into this
email, and I hope it gets to all those who wanted it.

Regards,

Evelyn

The latest video card information for JFW.Check out our web site at this
URL,http://www.hj.com/TechSupport/JFWTS/JFWVideo/JFWVC9X.htm, and you will
findgood news. Of the 21 cards listed, there is only one which does not
workwith JFW 3.31, the Diamond Viper 550. Here is a quote from that page:
Thefollowing list contains information about video card compatibility
withJAWS 3.31 for Windows 95/98. Each card was tested at a screen
resolution of1024x768 and at all available color depths 256 and greater.
Please notethat although JAWS will perform correctly at color depths
greater than 256 you will lose some graphic labels. This is due to the
fact that currentlyall graphics labeling is don at the 256 color depth
only. Consequently, you will need to relabel any unlabeled graphics when
running at colordepths greater than 256. As time goes on, HJ will be
labeling moregraphics in more resolutions.D. The different cursors in
JFW. There are five different cursorspresently in the JFW 3.31 version.
They are the PC cursor, the Virtual PCcursor, the JAWS cursor, the
Invisible cursor, and the Braille cursor. 1. The PC cursor. The
PC cursor is used for editing purposes, as whenyou are typing a letter,
writing email, or filling out forms. With it youcan edit text in a
document or navigate through the document. You canusually read and
maneuver in the menus as well and can use other specificcontrols, such as
buttons and checkboxes, depending on the application. The PC cursor is the
cursor most people use most often. It typically cannot move out of the
edit area to explore the screen or menu areas. The PCcursor is limited to
the currently visible screen. 2. The JAWS cursor. The JAWS cursor
is in essence the mouse cursor. It can explore the screen beyond where the
PC cursor is limited, for example, you can read the title bar with the JAWS
cursor but not with the PC cursor. Using the JAWS cursor, one can point
and click, drag and drop, and othertasks that typical mouse users might
perform. The JAWS cursor is limitedto the currently visible screen.
3. The Virtual PC cursor. The Virtual PC cursor is activated when
youopen IE 5 or HTML documents in Outlook or Outlook Express 5. When
thenewly opened page is finished loading, JAWS announces the presence
offrames, links, and forms on the page, and then begins to read the
entirepage automatically. The Virtual PC cursor works in the Internet
Explorer 5.0 environment inmuch the same way that the PC cursor does in
other applications. TheVirtual PC cursor responds to normal screen reading
keys in the same way,but there is no visual indication on the area of the
screen that is beingaffected. In addition, the screen does not
automatically scroll, so tobring up text that is out of screen range, you
must press INSERT+ESC or usethe scroll bars. (This may be useful for your
sight-dependent friends tofollow along.) When reading a Web page with the
Virtual PC cursor, you canselect text using the standard Windows text
selection keys, though there is verbal, rather than visual feedback of
what is being selected. When a page with frames first comes up, all frames
are readable insequential order. As you enter a frame, you hear, Frame
"X", where "X"represents the name of the frame. As you leave a frame, you
hear FrameEnd. SayAll in line mode reads the document from top to bottom,
and whenpressing CTRL to stop SayAll, you are positioned near the last
item read. You can navigate reading by line, sentence, or paragraph, as
well as bymoving by words and characters. When reading text on a Web page,
each link appears to be on its own line, even though this may not be true
on the screen. Visited links areidentified as visited. They are also
properly categorized as visited in theLinks List dialog. When JFW
encounters a link that does not have any textassociated with it, one of
two things is announced. If the link is a GIlink, the name of the graphic
is spoken. Otherwise, the last directorycomponent and the file name of the
URL is spoken instead. To quickly skip past headers, you can press
INSERT+ENTER. This moves youdown through the page to the first text of at
least 50 characters that isnot a link. When it arrives at the text, the
current line is read. When the cursor is on a line with a link, pressing
ENTER or NUM PAD SLASHactivates that link. Subsequently, pressing
BACKSPACE moves you back toyour last position on the last page read. When
using the Virtual cursorand you encounter a link on the screen that has an
ALT tag, JAWS will readthat tag since it is more descriptive. The Virtual
PC cursor is enabled in DEFAULT.JCF. If you do not want to usethe Virtual
PC cursor, turn it off by un-checking the checkbox. Use theVirtual PC
Cursor under the Advanced setting of the Configuration Managerin
DEFAULT.JCF. If you want to have this cursor disabled every time you arein
the IE 5, you can uncheck this box in BROWSEUI.JCF.To disable Virtual PC
cursor mode temporarily in one session, you cantoggle to the previous
method we used by pressing INSERT+Z. Note thatreformatting a Web page
using INSERT+F5 is only available in non-virtualcursor mode. This can be
useful for those with low vision who may be usinga screen magnification
program such as MAGic. The Virtual PC cursor canread to the end of a
document even though that part of the document may NOTbe visible on the
screen.Forms Mode. With the Virtual PC cursor positioned on a form field,
press ENTER or the NUM PAD SLASH key to switch to Forms mode. You will
hear"Forms Mode On", the information and the name of the control you are
on.When you press ENTER to go into Forms mode, the real PC cursor is
activatedon or in the current control. TAB and SHIFT+TAB may be used to
move betweenfields in forms mode. When using these keys for navigation,
the natural taborder is used, including any links that may appear between
fields. As youland on the different controls, JAWS announces the new
control, such as alink or a field. While in forms mod you can navigate
edit fields usingthe PC cursor as you normally do. To exit Forms mode,
press NUM PAD PLUS toactivate the Virtual PC cursor.Note: JFW remains in
Forms mode until the Virtual PC cursor is activated ora new page is
displayed, whichever comes first. Pressing INSERT+ESC alsoreturns you to
Virtual Cursor mode and moves the position of the Virtual PCcursor to the
first control on the current page.Tip: Return to the Virtual PC cursor
using the familiar NUM PAD PLUS. Thisturns Forms Mode off. 4. The
Invisible cursor. The Invisible cursor is similar to the JAWScursor,
except that it does not physically move the mouse pointer around on the
screen. This is useful in script writing where the mouse cursor mightget
people confused as it moves from place to place while performing ascript,
for example. 5. The Braille cursor. The Braille cursor is not
visible on thescreen, much like the Virtual PC cursor. JFW has three
different Braille modes,Line mode, Structured Mode, and Speech Box mode.
While in Line mode thebraille cursor by default can move freely with in
the current windowwithout moving the active cursor. This feature can be
toggled to move theactive cursor with the braille display. The Braille
cursor is mostly usedin script writing. The Braille cursor, like the
Virtual PC cursor, canread an entire document, even if it is not visible
on the screen.E. IE 5.0 with JFW 3.31. See section "D-3" above about the
Virtual PCcursor, which is used in IE 5.0. Being able to read a web page
exactlylike reading a word processing document is a tremendous feature.
Thisversion of JFW 3.31 is optimized for IE 5.0. The Virtual PC cursor
doesnot work with IE 4.01, however, we have left the ability to read IE
4.01 asit was in JFW version 3.2. F. PowerPoint with JFW 3.31. 1.
Overview. When you enter the PowerPoint program, the first thing Iwould
suggest is that you pull up the application specific JAWS help bypressing
the key combination INSERT+F1+F1. It starts out like this:PowerPoint 2000
is a graphics presentation package that allows you tocreate overheads,
slide shows, and professional presentations. PowerPointis a visual
application and thus offers limited accessibility for
creatingpresentations. Nevertheless, the new scripts in JFW 3.31 (nearly
2,720lines worth) make it possible to create and read slides relatively
easily.Due to the nature of PowerPoint, JFW will often tell you
information thatis not actually displayed on the screen but which
describes graphicalconcepts or animation effects that the sighted user
would take for granted.Where possible, descriptive information uses the
same jargon as used in thePowerPoint documentation. For example, the box
on a slide where a title isentered is called a Title Placeholder. JFW will
announce this placeholdereven though there is no text on the screen that
says the words "TitlePlaceholder." With the Internet and the Microsoft
PowerPoint 2000 presentation graphicsprogram, you can develop and deliver
presentations for the Web as well asfor more traditional face-to-face
meetings. In PowerPoint 2000, manyfamiliar features have been enhanced to
make presentation development anddelivery (online or otherwise) easier.
The new Tri-Pane view allows you to add slides, double-check your
outline, edit and reformat text, and type comments all in one combined
view. Youdon't have to navigate between slides to keep track of your
points, and ittakes less time to create your presentation. 2.
Creating a simple slide show. When PowerPoint first comes up,thereis a
dialog box on screen asking if you want to "Open an existingpresentation"
in Office 97 and Office 2000. There are four radio buttonshere, and you
can explore them if you wish. However, I prefer to simplypress escape to
clear these dialogs and begin working from the menus.Depending on how your
version of MS PowerPoint is set up, you may hear theword "Control" after
JFW reads the initial dialog box. It will soundsomething like this.
"Open an existing presentation radio button pressed, four of four,
Control". This means that when you press the escape key toclear the
initial dialog, there is a floating control menu somewhere on the screen,
and since it could hide what you are working on, here is how toturn it on
and off. a. First press escape to clear the initial PowerPoint
dialog with theradio buttons. b. Second, go to the View menu,
ALT+V, press T for Toolbars, downarrowuntil you hear "control toolbox
checked" and press enter to uncheck this, which closes the menus and this
toolbox, and then takes you back to themain PowerPoint screen.Once you
have made these simple changes, if necessary, here is how you cancreate a
simple PowerPoint presentation. c. Go to the File menu, ALT+F and
choose the first item, NEW. Thequickkey is CTRL+N. d. You get a
multilevel tab dialog box, with the focus on an iconinsideof the first tab
page. This icon is labeled "Blank Presentation.Pot" andthe first tab you
are on in the dialog box is "General Tab". You can beginusing this icon
by pressing enter, or you can go to the next multilevel tabpage by
pressing CTRL+TAB, which is the "Presentation Designs" tab. The
Presentation Designs tab offers many pre-set color schemes for the
colorsof your slide show presentation. JFW will read the names of
thesepresentation designs, but you may need someone to describe the layout
ofthe colors that are available. For example, you would not want a
slideshow with graphics about a birthday party to be the background for
abusiness presentation. A good one to use in general is
called"contemporary.pot", which has white text on a blue background. You
canexperiment with the different presentation designs later. e.
Press ENTER on Contemporary.Pot and you get a new dialog, calledNEWSLIDE.
Within this dialog are several types of slides, and when you gothere first
you land on the TITLE SLIDE. Press enter on this title slide. f.
Do a SAY ALL (Insert+down arrow) and you will hear that there
aretwoplaceholders on the current slide. Placeholders are where your text
willappear when you type it in. A good analogy for placeholders is that
theyare like magnets that you may put on your refrigerator. You can move
themaround, and in PowerPoint, you can move the placeholders around on
thescreen and actually change the size of the placeholders if you need to.
Irecommend not changing their sizes or location while you are learning.
Inthis case, you should hear "Center title Placeholder, and Subtitle
Placeholder". This slide has a place for the title of your
presentation, and it will be centered. It also has a place just below the
title forSubtitles. g. Press the TAB key to move to the center
title placeholder. h. Press the SPACEBAR and you will be in an
edit mode, go ahead andtype"My first Presentation". i. Press
ESCAPE to get out of the edit mode, then press TAB to go totheSubtitle
placeholder. j. Press the SPACEBAR to get into edit mode and type
something likethefollowing two lines: "Using JAWS for Windows",
then hit enter to go to the next line andtype "by Your Name".
k. Press ESCAPE to get out of edit mode. You have now created your first
slide, the title slide. l. Next, go to the file menu and choose
ALT+I for the insert menu, andchoose the first item in this list which is
"New Slide", or you can just press the quick key, CTRL+M to create the new
slide. m. The "new slide" dialog pops up again, but notice that
this time, youare not on the title slide. Instead, PowerPoint has moved
you to the nextslide to the right and says "bulleted List". You can
explore the otherchoices of slide types by pressing your arrow keys. Do
so at your leisure. n. Choose the "bulleted list" slide in this
example by pressing ENTERon it. o. SAY ALL (Insert+down arrow)
will tell you the placeholders on thenewslide, in this case, a title and a
body placeholder. p. Tab to the Title placeholder, press spacebar
to get into edit mode, and type the title of this slide, for example, I
used "JFW can now doPowerPoint!". Press escape to get out of edit mode.
q. Tab to the Body placeholder, press spacebar to get into edit
mode, andtype your first bullet point. In this case I typed "This is my
firstbullet point" and press ENTER to go to the next bullet point, just
belowthe first one. Type in another bullet point. In this case I typed
"Youcan make points with bullets". Press ESCAPE to get out of edit
mode.Basically, that is all there is to creating a PowerPoint
presentation. Youcan continue with different slide presentation designs,
or you can continueto use the bulleted list. Of course, you should stop
and save your file, just like saving any other windows program. CTRL+S or
ALT+F, then S.When you open an existing PowerPint presentation, you are in
a screenwhich has three basic areas. They are the slide view pane, the
speaker'snotes pane, and the outline view pane. You can move from pane to
pane bypressing the F6 key and JFW will let you know where you are and if
anythingis selected or not.PowerPoint has a lot of capability, and I admit
that I do not know muchmore than the basics I've showed you here. But the
good news is, you cannow start using and learning PowerPoint. And you can
read a PowerPointpresentation that someone in your office sends you, for
example. To view the PowerPoint presentation, go to the VIEW menu, ALT+V,
and chooseSLIDE SHOW, or the shortcut key W. You will be on the title
slide and JFWwill read the first slide for you automatically. To move to
and read thenext slide, simply press the spacebar. If you are giving a
livepresentation, you can silence JFW from speaking the "spacebar" each
time you press it by using the toggle key INSERT+2 on the number row to
toggleJFW keyboard echo to "none" just for that presentation. There you
have a very basic overview of how to create and read a
PowerPointpresentation. I hope this helps.G. Closing the Gap. We had a
very successful show at Closing the Gap inMinneapolis. It was great to
see all of our friends. At our booth and atour suite we were showing JAWS
for Windows running in the Windows 2000beta. We are already working on
fine tuning this, but of course, we willnot actually officially support
Windows 2000 until it is actually released. However, we are already
working with it and will be ready for the releaseof Windows 2000, which I
heard has been delayed until February 17, 2000.Also, we showed the MAGic
screen magnification program, which is being verywell received as more and
more people find out about it and as we add newfeatures.H. Formal

This is a new program which is being managedby Dan Clark. If you have any
questions, please call at extension 1016 orsend email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
1. The goal is to get JFW/MAGic in training centers at a discountedprice.
NOTE: This is for training centers or evaluation centers which
areSEPARATE from schools or other educational facilities, as they have
adifferent price structure. The Training Center price is 25% of the list
price, with the condition thatyou must purchase an initial SMA at full
price. Our reason for this is that we want you to be current for at least
a year or so. When your SMAexpires, we will send you a renewal notice,
offering to allow you topurchase the SMA for another period. Pricing is
as follows, and applies tothe United States only. Canada pricing is
slightly higher for the SMA.Call for pricing outside of the US. JFW
$200, SMA $100, s/h $10, total = $310. MAGic $75, SMA $75, s/h $10,
total = $160. Total Training Package price $470. Savings off
of list price, $815. JFWNT $300, SMA $200, s/h $10, total = $510.
MAGic NT $100, SMA $150, s/h $10, total = $260. Total Training
Package price $770. Savings off of list price, $1190. 2.
The Training Center copy can only be used on one machine at thetraining
center, and may also be used by the primary trainer at thatfacility at
home, so that they can better learn the product. You can doevaluations
and/or training with this copy as long as it remains on onlyone machine at
the Training Center. 3. Some Training Centers have very limited
funding for softwarepurchases. If you cannot afford the price of the
Training Package my goalwill be to try to get you to budget the Training
Package in your nextbudget cycle. If you agree to do this, we will
provide you with one TimedEvaluation of JFW/MAGic, at no charge,
sufficient to keep you running onone machine. Typically, we would set the
TE to run for 90 days. Ifnecessary, we can extend this time by sending
another TE authorizationdisk. Also, we will keep records and make sure
that no one abuses this, and the limit is no more than 3 Timed Evaluations
total. 4. Some consultants/trainers work independently of any one
particularTraining Center. If they do a lot of work and recommend
JFW/MAGic, I wouldlike to extend the Training Package price to them as
well. Theseindependent trainers will be evaluated on a case-by-case
basis.K. New Employees at HJ. Henter-Joyce, Inc. has continued to grow,
