My understanding is as follows: All are tied back to your deeds of previous birth.
Brahman Kshetreya Vaisya Shudra Cow Dog cat ant elephant etc etc. We may give whatever concessions to each community as a civilized society, can't change god's rules. In America, there is nothing like a good or bad profession or job. Professions like sweeper and restaurant boy will have their own respect. No one hates them. Lord Ram would eat from a tribal but modern Brahmans will not. It is their personal choice to disrespect and they will be punished in their next birth. Those Brahmans discriminate and mistreat SC/STs will become SC/ST or dog, cat in their next birth and that is the way it is. Even some SC/ST can become Brahman in their next birth. But what is sorry state is double standard. For getting a reserved job, there is a deliberate rush to become lower caste; at the same time, after availaing reservation and superseding many Brahmans, same people cry foul of discrimination.
