Having done a bit more research (and actually debugged the code) it looks like the issue is with BCEL and there's an issue on their bugzilla (but cant find one in their JIRA)

When i attempt to use the SchemaGen i get the following stack trace (below). It looks like it's an issue with BCEL and the generic signature.
