Would it be possible to implement a debug mode into JiBX that would help resolve that kind of problems by adding additional checking code and more informational exceptions?

If you'd like something beyond that, you can try running the JiBX-enhanced code through a decompiler to isolate the actual property. I know people have done this successfully in the past, though there have also been some problems; it probably depends on the type of operations you're doing in your binding.
