The current code (which you can't actually get access to, due to the continuing SourceForge problems) uses base64 encoding for byte[] by default, which you can override with your own serializer/deserializer if you want to handle it differently.
I will do a beta 3c release this week which will include this support. If the SourceForge CVS stays locked I'm going to try setting up a new module with the current code.
