You have to include the stax api and implementation libs in your code and/or make sure you have xpp installed. It will use xpp by default if it's in the classpath. Also, see documentation http://jibx.sourceforge.net/runtime.html, which explains how you can explicitly set it.

I fixed this by adding stax-1.2.0.jar to the classpath.
