IIRC It wasn't this particular optimization per se.
It was the overall effect of the general set of transforms and mainly about
{{(seq)}} {{/}}.
The issue is smashing up BGPs because BGPs are the way TDB hooks into the
system.
Try some {{queryString}} in:

If an optimization is added for {{(alt)}} in the case where left and right are
both simple (i.e. properties, not general paths), then it looks reasonable.
