For this special case, generally using a sentinel value that is guaranteed to
NOT be in the global table as the return value of {{KeyValueMapper}} is better
than using {{null}}, because the javadoc did not indicate {{null}} would mean
"do not join with the global table at all"; but I also agree with Matthias that
we can probably change this by adding the check internally and modify the
javadoc that returning {{null}} will be specially interpreted, if this becomes
a common pattern.
