Unit tests added for the validate positions, it was definitely missing. Also minor fix for a param that ended up wrong in the last merge with the exponential backoff change. Updated the exponential backoff latest changes from [here](https://github.com/apache/kafka/blob/39cc19c9924cd5589dc5b98b75ec8d380c159205/clients/src/main/java/org/apache/kafka/clients/consumer/internals/OffsetFetcher.java#L404) I will keep an eye on the build and update the results here.
