Review Comment:
   Hmm, I thought the simple fix you suggested is to do the following. This 
will bring back the deadlock issue in the test, right?
   
   ```
   private void writeToFileForTruncation() { 
     lock.readLock().lock(); 
     try { checkpoint.writeForTruncation(epochs.values()); 
     } finally { lock.readLock().unlock(); } 
   }
   ```
