Thanks for the PR. Merged to `trunk`. I did play around with unit testing, and figured that it's more complex to write a proper unit test, and thus did a PR myself as follow up to this fix: https://github.com/apache/kafka/pull/17919 Both, this fix and the unit test PR should be cherry-picked to older branches.
