Review Comment:
   @AndrewJSchofield I just found [this 
discussion](https://github.com/apache/kafka/pull/18296#discussion_r1899687406) 
suggesting the adoption of `assertEquals` instead of `assertInstanceOf`. 
   
   Is this still valid in the context of the cleanup process?
