What you say sounds a little bit odd – static groups is enable on the client
config, but it's a broker side feature. So the client version should not
matter, but the broker version. 4.2/4.3 brokers should return "unsupported
errro", but 4.4+ brokers (ie, 4.4 and trunk branch) should support it.
Or did you run the 4.2.1/4.3.1 client agains an older broker by accident? If
not, and you did use a 4.4+ broker, would need to take a closer look what's
going on...
