see-quick opened a new pull request, #23777:
URL: https://github.com/apache/kafka/pull/23777
Since #23560 the base image is overridable, but the Dockerfile still runs
`apk` and BusyBox `adduser` unconditionally, so only Alpine works.
Now, (i.)`apk` runs only when present the build checks for `java`, `bash`,
`hostname`, `tar`, `gzip` (plus
`wget`, `gpg` with `--kafka-url`); (ii.) names any missing tool `useradd`
is used where present, `adduser` otherwise
(iii.) `WORKDIR /` in both stages
> [!IMPORTANT]
> Alpine behaviour is unchanged.
Checked with podman on the default base (archive and url),
`eclipse-temurin:21-jre` (Ubuntu) and CentOS Stream10; a base without
`hostname` fails at the check.
