I am one of those guys who is swamped with primary jobs.. I do have some free time 
this weekend and wouldn't mind applying some patches.. Are they attached to bug 
reports? (Sorry, haven't been following the list closely lately)

AFAIK only people with committer rights can apply patches. If other committers 
don't respond and you could do this it would be nice of course:) (and you are 
in contributors list)
I think beeing the main developer is not a problem, because there is a need 
for somebody that will check and commit patches. People are sending patches 
and it would be a great loss if they were not included.
