I have successfully used the HTTP-authentication with SSL. You need to be careful to exactly match the URL (including the protocol https: and the port number if it's there).

Hans: I'd suggest you set up a Tree Listener and check the actual URL used in the request exactly matches the prefix you're giving in the HTTP Authentication config element.
