I remember another jmeter.properties-related problem when working path was not 
set properly (but I'm not sure about it now). It's important to set it to 
jmeter/bin. Where did you place the jmeter.properties file? It should be in 
jmeter/bin.

Try x86/GTK - it's nicer than Motif (IMO) - you seen see it on screenshots in 
tutorial. And I've read that it will be available for QT too.
